33 Davis Love III Drive, Saint Helena Island, South Carolina 29920, United States
Savannah, a coastal Georgia city, is separated from South Carolina by the Savannah River. It’s known for manicured parks, horse-drawn carriages and antebellum architecture. Its historic district is filled with cobble stoned squares and parks such as Forsyth Park shaded by oak trees covered with Spanish moss.
Charleston, the South Carolina port city founded in 1670, is defined by its cobblestone streets, horse-drawn carriages and pastel antebellum houses, particularly in the elegant French Quarter and Battery districts. The Battery promenade and Waterfront Park both overlook Charleston Harbor, while Fort Sumter, a federal stronghold where the first shots of the Civil War rang out, lies across the water.
You will find days full of adventure in downtown Beaufort, neighboring Port Royal and St. Helena Island where you can browse through the pages of antebellum, Civil War and Reconstruction periods. Artifacts are exhibited and history interpreted in churches, cemeteries, museums, home tours and carefully preserved private homes.
Located on St. Helena’s Island all the way at Lands End , Fort Fremont is a Spanish American fort built in 1899. The fort was named after General Charles C. Fremont, a Savannah native. General Fremont had played an enormous role in capturing California from Mexico years before. The only thing that survives today is the 10-inch battery, the rapid-fire battery and the brick foundation of the hospital.
There are many ghost stories that are attached to the mysterious compound in the wooded area next to the sea. he story of the ‘Lands End Light’ is very familiar to many local Beaufortonians. Noted in local lore as a ghostly, haunted place, Land’s End and Fort Fremont raise the hair on the back of the neck of many folks. ‘The Light’ is said to possibly be the lantern of a Confederate soldier who was on patrol along Land’s End Road in 1861, on the watch for Union soldiers who were expected to invade St. Helena Island. A Yankee soldier (or soldiers) sneaked up behind him and cut off his head, and he now goes up and down the road in search of it, carrying his old iron lantern.
The gutted, gothic arches of what we know today as the Old Sheldon Church Ruins were originally part of a house of worship known as Prince William’s Parish Church. Built around the mid-1700s, the church was nearly destroyed by the British during the Revolutionary War not many years after it was completed. The remains of the church would lay abandoned for decades after its first attempted destruction but the stone foundations that remained were finally rebuilt in 1826.
Unfortunately this second life for the church was to be about as brief as the first. When General Sherman led his troops through South Carolina, they too felt like it would be a good time to put the Old Sheldon Church to the torch, once again burning the building down to its stone foundations. According to legend, a lady in a simple brown dress still watches over her child’s grave, and it’s said that when you pass near the grave, you’re overcome by sorrow.
The Gullah Geechee have continued to survive and represent the most tangible living example of one of the outcomes of the Port Royal Experiment, a plan to tutor the freedmen out of slavery and into freedom.
Some of the most prolific lore of the Gullah culture lies around the BOO HAG.
According to the legend, Boo Hags are similar to vampires. Unlike vampires, they gain sustenance from a person's breath, as opposed to their blood, by riding their victims.
They have no skin, and thus are red. In order to be less conspicuous, they will steal a victim's skin and use it for as long as it holds out. The hag will generally gain access to the home through a small crack, crevice, or hole. The hag will then position themselves over the sleeping victim, sucking their breath. This act renders the victim helpless, and induces a deep dream-filled sleep. The hag tends to leave the victim alive, however, if the victim struggles, the hag may take their skin, leaving the victim to suffer. After taking the victim's energy, the hag flies off. When the victim awakes, they may feel short of breath, but generally very tired.
